The Hero Archetype and Christianity

Posted by Eli216AkAMcdoAddict May. 7, 2008 @ 3:30 PM EDT

I decided to apply what I have learned in my previous post and put it into good use. What better way to start it off with someone almost everyone is familiar with. So here is my application of the Hero Archetype in Philippine Literature, putting Jesus Christ in the spotlight. For the sake of convention, I will call each description as ANDA followed by the number it appeared in my previous post.

ANDA 1.) Christ is born in Bethlehem but left his birthplace and stayed in Nazareth.

ANDA 3.) Jesus Christ realizes his mission early in his childhood and later on in his adult life.

ANDA 2.) Jesus' "magical item" is the fact that he is the Son of God.

ANDA 4-5.) Jesus dukes it out with the evil in the world, even encounters The Devil in his fasting.

ANDA 6-7.) Sometime in his praying in Gethsemane, he doubts whether or not he should die. According to the Pasyong Mahal (The Passion Story), Jesus sees an angel that tells him not to doubt himself and that he must fulfill his duties as the Son of God.

ANDA 8.) Jesus dies on the Cross for our sins.

ANDA 9-10.) After three days He rises from the dead and defeats the evil, saving us from our sins.

And Finally

ANDA 11.) Jesus returns to the Kingdom of God and celebrates their victory over evil.

The Hero Archetype, as you call it, is actually quite familiar in classic literature throughout the world, not just in Philippine writing. Understanding this, then, would give a little boost to the understanding of the stories written about Jesus and his exploits.

I'm not calling into question yours or anyone else's believe system but you have to consider that all these things written about Jesus not doubt found their base in form from the classic literature they were written after.

The hero's journey appeals to our base thoughts and instincts. We want to see the hero struggle so we can sympathize with him. We want to see turmoil and the eventual triumph of good over evil. You see it in everything from Oedipus, to Jesus, to Spiderman,

Yep I understand...I forgot to mention however that this archetype was present way before anyone got around on this...according to historians, this archetype was exclusive to the Philippines until 1700AD...so from the beginning of the first civilization in the country, this archetype was already present
